Nicholas Smith ADI
Nick Smith fully qualified as an Approved Driving Instructor in August of 2021 after five months as a trainee instructor with a national driving school. In October of 2022 he began the process of splitting from that national school and set up Steel City Driver Training with the aim of providing a better service for customers and instructors alike.
Nick has embraced the DVSA’s preferred Client Centred Learning. This means that from the earliest possible stage Nick will work with you to decide the way your driving lessons should be structured.
This extends to instructor training too. Nick firmly believes in practicing what he preaches and agrees a training structure which suits the candidate.
Nick teaches automatic only in a 2020 Hyundai Kona Electric. The decision was made to switch to electric because Nick feels it’s vital that someone doing high milage, such as a driving instructor, should do all they can to minimise their impact on the environment. A namer of cars, Nick calls his Hyundai Eva.
Nick also serves as a committee member for the Sheffield & District Driving Instructors Association and manages their website.
Nick Out of the Car.
Away from the driving school, Nick is a keen follower of motorsport. In fact Nick has been a member of the Intelligent Money British GT Championship press pack for over a decade and also runs the British Sportscar Podcast. A keen photographer, he also shoots as many race meetings as he can a year.
Before becoming an instructor Nick worked for 10 years as a truck driver, travelling all over the UK at the wheel of an articulated lorry. During the motorsport off season, he turns his photographic habit on the trucks and other commercial vehicles of Sheffield and the peaks.
Since switching to an electric tuition car, he has also become a bit of an EV evangelist and is an active member of the Yorkshire EV Club.
When not working at driving instructing, photographing, podcasting or website building, Nick is an avid gamer. He prefers racing games and simulators and can often be found at night plowing a virtual field or delivering a virtual lorry load of stuff.
