Your driving test will include one of seven Show Me Questions. These question are asked while the vehicle is in motion and you will need to demonstrate the correct method whilst maintaining full control of the vehicle.

The examiner will start the question with, “When it is safe to do so…” This means that you should find the right time to demonstrate the required action. Halfway through a roundabout is not a safe time to be fiddling with the controls. Usually it will be immediately safe to do the action but if you continue on for a little while before doing it, you won’t collect a fault.

The answers herein apply to a 2020 Hyundai Kona Electric. The majority of Hyundai’s will share similar controls but you may need to familiarise yourself with the controls of the vehicle you are taking to test if you have a different car.

The seven show me questions are:

When it is safe to do so please show me how you would turn on your dipped beam headlights?

The headlights on most Hyundai vehicles are controlled by the indicator stalk. Twist the end of the indicator stalk forwards as far as it will go. The little white arrow should point at the symbol for dipped headlights, which is shown opposite.

Once you have completed this and the examiner tells you too, you can twist the end of the indicator stalk back to either the OFF or AUTO position.

If you have booked a test with additional accommodations, saying the headlights are on automatic and telling the examiner how you would turn them on is sufficient. If you have a standard test booking you must physically demonstrate the action.

If your lights aren’t on the end of your indicator stalk look to the dashboard next to your right knee. Vauxhall, Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, Skoda and Ford often put this control here, as do most van manufacturers and Volvo and MAN trucks. Newer Scania trucks have it on the drivers door.

When it is safe to do so please show me how you would sound your horn?

A nice easy one for you here. Just press the big Hyundai badge in the middle of the steering wheel to sound the horn.

They are becoming much rarer, but some cars have their horn on the end of the indicator stalk. This is also true of many Renault, DAF and Iveco commercial vehicles.

When it is safe to do so please show me how you would defrost your front window?

Reach down to the centre console. The window demisters are among the ventilation controls below the sat nav screen. If you vehicle has climate control it will have a button to press. In the Hyundai Kona it is the second button from the left on the bottom row.

Pressing this button will cause the ventilation system to go full blast at the window. If you are having misting issues you can turn this on, then use the fan speed dial on the right to slow the fans down so you can hear easier.

If your vehicle doesn’t have climate control you’ve probably got three dials instead. Turn the fans to full, the direction to the front window, (The curved window with wavy lines on it) and the heat to max. If the vehicle has air conditioning, turn it on. Air con also dries the air.

Some cars have a heated front window. You can tell these from the thin wavy lines you can see if you look hard at the front windscreen.

Once the examiner has acknowledged your completing the task, you can turn it off again.

When it is safe to do so please show me how you would demist your rear window?

Reach down to the centre console. The window demisters are among the ventilation controls below the sat nav screen. If you vehicle has climate control it will have a button to press. In the Hyundai Kona it is the middle button on the bottom row.

Pressing this button passes electricity through the black wires embedded in the rear window. This generates heat which causes the window to clear.

When it is safe to do so please show me how you would wash and clean your front window?

Everything wiper related is controlled by the right hand stalk behind the steering wheel on a Hyundai. To wash the front window, pull the stalk towards you and hold for a few seconds while the car sprays and wipes your windscreen.

Part of your regular checks should include topping up screen wash under the bonnet. A vehicle without screenwash is legally unroadworthy and if you are stopped you can be fined for driving without screen wash.

EV TIP: The temperature ratings on screen wash takes into account the heat produced by an engine. -10 degree screen wash can freeze at around -8 and EVs don’t produce heat under the bonnet to melt it. Make sure you fill up with strong screen wash if cold weather is forecast.

When it is safe to do so please show me how you would open and close your side window?

Reach down to the drivers door card and find the electric window switch with the little ridge on it. This is the drivers side window switch.

Press it down to lower the window. As soon as you have done this you can hook your finger under the switch and pull it back up again to close.
